Middle East’s First Hindu Stone Temple Opens in Abu Dhabi

The BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi, also known as the Abu Dhabi Hindu Temple, stands as a groundbreaking milestone in Hindu heritage outside India. Inaugurated on February 14, 2024, this majestic mandir is the first traditional Hindu stone temple in the Middle East and the largest Hindu temple in West Asia. Built by the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), it embodies timeless Hindu traditions while promoting interfaith harmony and cultural diplomacy between India and the UAE.

For the global Hindu community, including the thriving diaspora in the Gulf and beyond, this mandir represents renewed spiritual access, cultural pride, and a beacon of unity. Explore why the BAPS Mandir UAE is more than a place of worship—it’s a testament to shared values of tolerance and coexistence.

Historical Background & Vision

The vision for the mandir traces back to 1997 when Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the revered spiritual leader of BAPS (1921–2016), envisioned a temple during his visit to the UAE that would unite countries, cultures, and religions. This dream was realized through the generous allocation of 27 acres of land in Abu Mureikha (Abu Dhabi) by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, in 2015.

Construction began in December 2019 after legal approvals, with the foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his 2018 UAE visit. The temple was consecrated (prana pratishtha) and inaugurated on February 14, 2024, by His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj in the presence of PM Modi and UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahyan. It opened to the public shortly after, becoming a living symbol of India-UAE friendship.

Architectural Marvel & Traditional Features

Crafted according to ancient Hindu Shilpa Shastras (treatises on temple architecture), the BAPS Hindu Mandir is an engineering and artistic triumph:

  • Materials & Design — Built entirely with interlocking pink sandstone from Rajasthan, India, and Italian marble. No steel or concrete in the main structure—pure traditional stone craftsmanship.
  • Dimensions — Stands 108 feet tall, 262 feet long, and 180 feet wide, with seven soaring spires (shikharas) symbolizing the seven emirates of the UAE.
  • Innovations — First Hindu stone mandir to use complete digital modeling and seismic simulations for durability in the desert environment.
  • Intricate Carvings — Over 40,000 cubic feet of stone hand-carved with motifs of deities, flora, fauna, and universal symbols of peace. Features include ornate columns, intricate jali work, and depictions of Hindu epics.
  • Sacred Spaces — Houses murtis (idols) of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, Radha-Krishna, Sita-Ram, Shiva-Parvati, and others, with spaces for daily aartis, including the evening Ganga Aarti.

This blend of tradition and modern engineering makes it a standout among Hindu temples outside India.

Significance for Global Hindu Unity & Diaspora

For millions of Hindus in the UAE (over 3.5 million Indian expatriates) and the broader diaspora, the mandir provides a spiritual home in a region historically without large-scale traditional stone temples. It strengthens Hindu identity, offers daily darshan, festivals, and cultural programs, fostering community bonds.

Globally, it inspires Hindu temples outside India, showing how faith thrives through devotion and collaboration. BAPS’s worldwide network (over 1,300 mandirs) underscores Hindu unity, connecting devotees from India to the Gulf, USA, UK, and beyond.

Interfaith Harmony & Cultural Diplomacy

The mandir exemplifies UAE’s commitment to tolerance, aligning with its Ministry of Tolerance and Coexistence. Open to all faiths, it hosts interfaith events like the ‘Omsiyyat’ cultural evening in April 2024, bringing together leaders from diverse religions.

It highlights India-UAE cultural diplomacy: a land gift from UAE leadership, joint inauguration by leaders, and shared values of peace. Described by dignitaries as a “global symbol of interfaith harmony,” it promotes dialogue, acceptance, and mutual respect—key in today’s world.
