India-EU FTA 2026: Modi’s Historic ‘Mother of All Deals’ Sealed

India-EU Free Trade Agreement: Modi’s Biggest Deal Boosts Trade & Jobs

On January 27, 2026, during the 16th India-EU Summit in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen officially concluded negotiations on the long-awaited India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) — hailed as the “mother of all deals” and India’s largest-ever trade pact!

This landmark agreement ends nearly 20 years of tough talks, creating a powerhouse free trade zone uniting 2 billion people, representing 25% of global GDP and one-third of worldwide trade. Amid global uncertainties like US tariff threats, this deal strengthens strategic ties and opens massive opportunities for growth.

PM Modi called it “India’s biggest and most historic free trade agreement”, stating: “This is a truly big moment… It will bring tremendous opportunities for India’s 1.4 billion people and millions across the EU. Together, we represent 25% of global GDP and one-third of global trade.”

Von der Leyen echoed the thrill, declaring it the “mother of all deals” that delivers security in an insecure world through deeper economic and strategic partnership.

Why This Deal is a Game-Changer:

  • Tariff Reductions — India eliminates/reduces tariffs on 96.6% of EU goods (saving €4 billion annually for European exporters), while the EU phases in cuts covering 99% of Indian exports.
  • Export Boom — EU goods exports to India could double by 2032. Indian winners include textiles, gems & jewellery, pharmaceuticals, leather, IT services, chemicals (97.5% duty-free), and manufacturing.
  • Protected Sectors — India’s agriculture, dairy, and farmers fully safeguarded — no major concessions, a key Indian win.
  • Market Access Perks — Easier entry for EU cars (tariffs dropping to as low as 10% phased), wine, spirits (down to 20-40%), processed foods, and more.
  • Beyond Trade — Summit also launched a Security and Defence Partnership plus mobility cooperation — turning this into a full strategic alliance.

This comes at a pivotal time, positioning India as a reliable global hub amid shifting geopolitics. It’s a massive step toward Viksit Bharat, promising jobs, investment inflows, manufacturing surge, and services growth.
