ISRO Makes History: LVM3-M6 Launches Heaviest-Ever US
December 24, 2025 – In a moment of immense pride for NRIs worldwide, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved a groundbreaking feat with the flawless launch of the LVM3-M6 mission. The powerful ‘Baahubali’ rocket successfully placed the 6,100 kg BlueBird Block-2 communications satellite—developed by US-based AST SpaceMobile—into its precise Low Earth Orbit from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. This is the heaviest payload ever launched from Indian soil using an indigenous rocket, highlighting India’s rising dominance in the global commercial space market.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the triumph, posting: “A significant stride in India’s space sector… The successful LVM3-M6 launch, placing the heaviest satellite ever launched from Indian soil, the spacecraft of USA, BlueBird Block-2, into its intended orbit, marks a proud milestone in India’s space journey. It strengthens India’s heavy-lift launch capability and reinforces our growing role in the global commercial launch market. This is also reflective of our efforts towards an Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Congratulations to our hardworking space scientists and engineers. India continues to soar higher in the world of space!”
The majestic liftoff occurred at 8:55 AM IST, with the satellite separating perfectly about 16 minutes later into a 520 km circular orbit. This mission underscores the reliability of the LVM3, which boasts a 100% success record.
Key Achievements of the LVM3-M6 / BlueBird Block-2 Mission for NRIs:
- Record-Heaviest Payload from India: 6,100 kg BlueBird Block-2 surpasses all previous Indian-launched satellites in weight.
- World’s Largest Commercial Array in LEO: Equipped with a 223 m² antenna for direct-to-mobile 4G/5G connectivity, revolutionizing global broadband access without ground infrastructure.
- Boost for Indian Talent Abroad: Many NRIs in the US tech and space sectors collaborate with firms like AST SpaceMobile, making this Indo-US partnership a direct source of pride.
- Commercial Leap via NSIL: Executed through NewSpace India Limited, this dedicated US client mission opens doors for more international contracts.
- Aatmanirbhar Bharat in Action: Fully indigenous technology powering global missions, inspiring the next generation of Indian professionals worldwide.
- Gaganyaan Confidence Builder: Proven heavy-lift capability paves the way for India’s manned spaceflight program.
ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan called it a “perfect textbook launch,” emphasizing India’s first dedicated commercial deployment for a US customer and the rapid 52-day turnaround from the prior mission.
Why This Success Resonates with the Global Indian Community
For millions of NRIs, ISRO’s achievements symbolize Bharat’s technological excellence and self-reliance. This launch not only strengthens India’s space economy but also creates opportunities for skilled Indians abroad in aerospace, telecom, and innovation hubs. As India attracts more global space business, NRIs can look forward to deeper collaborations and career prospects tied to homegrown triumphs.
