India’s iPhone Exports Soar 53% in H1 2025, with 18.6M Units Shipped to US

India Becomes Key Apple Manufacturing Hub with Record-Breaking iPhone Exports

In a remarkable achievement for India’s technology sector, the country exported 23.9 million iPhones in the first half of 2025 (January–June), marking a stellar 53% year-on-year (YoY) growth compared to 15.6 million units in H1 2024. The United States emerged as the primary destination, receiving 18.6 million units, or 78% of India’s total iPhone exports, up from 53% the previous year. This surge underscores India’s growing prominence as a global manufacturing hub for Apple, driven by strategic diversification and robust government incentives.

Unprecedented Growth in iPhone Production

According to data from market research firm Canalys, India’s iPhone production surged by 53% YoY, reaching 23.9 million units in H1 2025, the fastest first-half ramp-up since Apple began assembling smartphones in the country in 2017. The export value soared to $22.56 billion, compared to $14.71 billion in H1 2024, reflecting India’s critical role in Apple’s global supply chain. Foxconn led the manufacturing efforts, contributing over half of the exported volume, while the Tata Group accounted for nearly 40% of the shipments, showcasing improved yield rates and production maturity.

US Dominates as Top Export Market

The United States absorbed 18.6 million iPhones from India in H1 2025, with 88% of June’s exports heading to the U.S., up from 46% in June 2024. This shift reflects Apple’s response to rising U.S. demand and efforts to diversify away from China amid potential tariff pressures. Other markets, including the Netherlands, UAE, Czech Republic, UK, and Japan, saw their share of Indian iPhone exports decline to 2–4% each, highlighting the U.S.’s dominance as the primary destination.

Strategic Shift Amid Global Trade Dynamics

Apple’s accelerated production in India aligns with its strategy to reduce reliance on China, particularly in light of looming U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods. In March 2025, Apple transported five planes full of iPhones from India to the U.S. to stockpile inventory ahead of a 10% reciprocal tariff imposed on April 5, 2025. This move helped Apple maintain pricing stability temporarily. Despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s calls for Apple to prioritize U.S.-based manufacturing, India’s role as a manufacturing powerhouse continues to grow, supported by the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which has driven local value addition to 15–20% per iPhone model.

India’s Tech Sector on the Rise

The Indian government celebrated this milestone, with the Prime Minister’s Office posting on X, “Apple harvests record iPhone output from its India orchard,” emphasizing India’s growing role in global tech manufacturing. The PLI scheme has attracted major players like Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata Group, with Foxconn and Tata alone accounting for 88% of India’s iPhone exports in H1 2025. This growth has positioned India as a vital hub in Apple’s global operations, contributing nearly 75% of the country’s total smartphone exports, valued at over $23.29 billion in FY25.

Challenges and Future Outlook

Despite the export boom, challenges remain. The departure of Chinese engineers from Foxconn’s India facilities has raised concerns about scaling production to meet growing demand. Additionally, China remains a key supplier of critical components, making a full transition to India unlikely in the near term. However, analysts like Sanyam Chaurasia from Canalys Omdia note that India’s improving infrastructure and workforce preparedness, particularly for high-end models like the iPhone Pro and Pro Max, signal a transformative phase for the country’s tech sector.

Implications for the Indian-American Community

For the Indian-American community and NRIs, this milestone highlights India’s emergence as a global tech leader, creating economic opportunities and strengthening ties with the U.S. market. As Apple expands its retail presence in India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market, the Indian diaspora can take pride in their homeland’s contribution to the global tech landscape. With India projected to account for up to 40% of Apple’s global iPhone production in the next 18 months, the country’s role in shaping the future of technology is undeniable.
