India vs Pakistan WCL 2025 Match Cancelled Amid Player Boycott and Backlash
By NRIGlobe News Desk | Published: July 20, 2025 | Updated: July 20, 2025

The much-awaited India vs Pakistan match in the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025, set for July 20 at Edgbaston, Birmingham, has been officially called off. The cancellation follows intense backlash and withdrawals by key Indian cricket stars, including Shikhar Dhawan, Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan, and Irfan Pathan, due to geopolitical tensions and the recent Pahalgam terror attack.

Why Was the India vs Pakistan WCL Match Cancelled?

The WCL organizers had planned the India-Pakistan clash to promote goodwill, drawing inspiration from recent cross-border sporting events like a volleyball match and the Pakistan hockey team’s planned visit to India. However, the announcement sparked widespread outrage, especially after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, which claimed 26 lives and heightened India-Pakistan tensions. Many fans and players viewed the match as insensitive given the circumstances.

WCL Statement: “We at WCL have always cherished and loved cricket, and our only aim has been to give fans some good, happy moments… But maybe in the process, we ended up hurting the feelings of many and stirring emotions. Hence, we have decided to call off the India vs Pakistan match. We sincerely apologize again for hurting the sentiments.”

Indian Cricket Legends Take a Stand

Shikhar Dhawan was among the first to publicly opt out, sharing an email sent to WCL organizers on May 11, 2025, citing geopolitical concerns. “Jo kadam 11 May ko liya, uspe aaj bhi waise hi khada hoon. Mera desh mere liye sab kuch hai,” Dhawan posted on X, reaffirming his stance. Other players, including Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan, and Irfan Pathan, reportedly followed, with some sources noting private communications to organizers expressing similar sentiments.

Sponsor EaseMyTrip Pulls Out

Major WCL sponsor EaseMyTrip also withdrew support for any match involving Pakistan. Despite a five-year sponsorship deal, the company stated, “EaseMyTrip will not be associated with or participate in any WCL match involving Pakistan. We proudly continue to support the India Champions. Bharat First. Always.” This move added significant pressure on the organizers to cancel the match.

Geopolitical Context and Public Sentiment

The cancellation comes amid heightened tensions following the Pahalgam attack and India’s Operation Sindoor. Public outcry, amplified on social media, played a key role, with fans and figures like Priyanka Chaturvedi strongly opposing the match. Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi’s past remarks about India further fueled criticism from Indian players and fans.

What’s Next for WCL 2025?

The World Championship of Legends 2025, sanctioned by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), runs from July 18 to August 2 across Birmingham, Northampton, Leicester, and Leeds. Despite the cancellation, India Champions, led by Yuvraj Singh, remain strong contenders, having clinched the inaugural WCL title in 2024 against Pakistan. The tournament continues with other exciting fixtures, but the absence of the India-Pakistan clash has raised questions about future scheduling amid ongoing geopolitical sensitivities.
