In a rare and dramatic display of global dissent, more than 100 diplomats from over 50 nations<\/strong> staged a coordinated walkout<\/strong> during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s address<\/strong> at the United Nations General Assembly on September 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Led by the Palestinian delegation, the protest emptied much of the 1,800-seat chamber. As Netanyahu began defending Israel\u2019s war in Gaza, the hall reverberated with boos, walkouts, and calls for order<\/strong>, symbolizing Israel\u2019s mounting diplomatic isolation<\/strong> amid a nearly two-year-long conflict that has devastated the enclave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delegations from Colombia, Ireland, Spain<\/strong>, and others exited en masse. Allies such as the United States and United Kingdom were represented only by junior officials, with top envoys conspicuously absent. Outside UN headquarters, thousands of demonstrators<\/strong> rallied in Times Square, condemning Israel\u2019s actions and Netanyahu\u2019s New York appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfazed by the exodus, Netanyahu delivered a 25-minute, combative speech<\/strong>, dismissing genocide allegations as \u201cbaseless blood libels.\u201d<\/em> He vowed Israel would \u201cfinish the job\u201d<\/em> against Hamas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brandishing a map titled \u201cThe Curse\u201d<\/em>, he accused Iran of orchestrating proxy networks across the Middle East, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. He quipped: \u201cYou remember those beepers, the pagers? We paged Hezbollah, and believe me, they got the message.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Revisiting the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks<\/strong> that killed 1,139 Israelis and left 48 hostages in captivity, Netanyahu issued a stark ultimatum: \u201cLay down your arms, free the hostages. If you don\u2019t, Israel will hunt you down.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He denounced recent Palestinian statehood recognitions<\/strong>\u2014now at 157 UN members\u2014as \u201cdisgraceful\u201d<\/em> and warned that rewarding violence meant \u201cmurdering Jews pays off.\u201d<\/em> A two-state solution, he declared, was \u201csheer madness.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes continued: at least 47 Palestinians<\/strong> were reported killed in Gaza City on September 26, including eight in a strike on a displaced persons\u2019 camp in Nuseirat. Gaza health officials say the war\u2019s death toll now exceeds 65,000<\/strong>, with Netanyahu facing ICC warrants for war crimes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shifting Alliances and U.S. Mediation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The speech came days before Netanyahu\u2019s scheduled September 30 White House meeting<\/strong> with U.S. President Donald Trump\u2014his fourth since Trump\u2019s second term began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump hinted at a possible breakthrough: \u201cI think we have maybe a deal on Gaza. It will get the hostages back and end the war.\u201d<\/em> Yet past initiatives for Gaza governance without Hamas have faltered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Netanyahu also warned against Iran\u2019s nuclear resurgence<\/strong>, just as the UN Security Council prepares to reimpose sanctions on Tehran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Critics at home and abroad blasted the address. Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid<\/strong> said Netanyahu had \u201cworsened Israel\u2019s situation\u201d<\/em> in the face of a \u201cdiplomatic tsunami.\u201d<\/em> Ireland\u2019s Prime Minister Micheal Martin accused Israel of abandoning international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On social media, pro-Palestinian voices praised the walkout as a \u201cmoral stand,\u201d<\/em> while Netanyahu\u2019s supporters lauded his resolve. Colombian Vice President Francia M\u00e1rquez<\/strong> led the exodus, echoing her country\u2019s push for war-crimes accountability at The Hague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
