Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan Postponed: Release Delayed from January

Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated final film before full-time politics, Jana Nayagan, has been officially postponed from its scheduled January 9, 2026 release. Fans worldwide are disappointed as the movie faces delays amid a certification row with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

In a major update for Thalapathy Vijay fans, the release of Jana Nayagan (also known as Thalapathy 69) has been postponed indefinitely. The film, directed by H Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, was set to hit theaters on January 9, 2026, ahead of the Pongal festival. However, due to unavoidable circumstances primarily linked to delays in obtaining the CBFC certificate, the makers have announced the postponement.

Official Announcement and Reasons for Postponement

On January 7, 2026, distributors in key overseas markets including Europe, Malaysia, the UK, US, and Canada confirmed the delay via social media posts. They cited “unforeseen circumstances” and stated that a new release date would be announced soon.

The production house later echoed this, assuring fans that updates on the revised schedule are forthcoming. Reports indicate that the primary issue stems from pending clearance from the CBFC in India. The Madras High Court has been involved, with proceedings ongoing – the court reserved its order on a plea to issue the censor certificate, and a decision was expected around the original release date.

Despite receiving clearance in some international markets like the UK, the lack of a unified global certification has forced the postponement both in India and overseas. This has led to the cancellation of advance bookings and special screenings that were generating massive hype.

Impact on Fans and Box Office

Jana Nayagan was billed as Thalapathy Vijay’s farewell to cinema before he dives fully into politics with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. The film features a star-studded cast including Bobby Deol as the antagonist, along with other prominent actors. With a reported budget exceeding ₹400-500 crore, expectations were sky-high for a record-breaking Pongal release.

The delay has sparked disappointment among Vijay’s massive fanbase, especially NRIs eagerly awaiting the movie. Advance sales were strong, but now theaters and distributors are managing refunds and rescheduling.

What’s Next for Jana Nayagan?

The makers have promised a new release date soon, potentially pushing it to a later slot in 2026 to avoid clashing with other big releases. As Vijay transitions to his political career, this film remains a significant milestone for his legions of fans.
