Gale Warnings Issued for Great Lakes: Strong Winds and Hazardous

December 18, 2025 – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued gale warnings and related alerts for portions of the Great Lakes, particularly Lake Superior, with strong winds expected to intensify starting this afternoon. Mariners, boaters, and coastal residents in the USA, including many in the NRI community along the lakeshores, are urged to stay vigilant as hazardous marine conditions develop.

Latest Gale Warnings on USA Great Lakes

As of December 18, 2025:

  • Lake Superior: A Gale Warning is in effect from 3:00 PM CST Thursday (December 18) to 3:00 AM CST Friday (December 19). Winds could gust up to gale force (34-47 knots), creating dangerous waves and reduced visibility.
  • Heavy Freezing Spray Warning: Also active from 6:00 PM CST December 18 to 7:00 AM CST December 19 in parts of Lake Superior, posing risks of ice accumulation on vessels.
  • Other Great Lakes (Michigan, Huron, Erie, Ontario): No widespread gale warnings currently, but monitor for small craft advisories and potential escalation due to shifting low-pressure systems.

These conditions are driven by a potent weather system bringing gusty winds, potential lakeshore impacts, and colder temperatures. Recent events earlier in the week saw waves up to 17-18 feet on Lakes Huron and Superior.

Safety Tips for Great Lakes Marine Weather

  • Boaters and Mariners: Postpone travel on open waters. Gale-force winds can lead to capsizing, heavy spray, and rapid ice buildup.
  • Lakeshore Communities: Watch for high waves, potential minor flooding, and power outages in exposed areas.
  • Stay updated via official sources, especially if traveling or with family near the lakes.

Stay safe during this winter weather event on the USA Great Lakes!
