Karun Nair’s Gritty Fifty Anchors India Amidst English Bowling Storm
Venue: The Oval, London
Stumps, Day 1: India – 204/6
Day Summary
On the greenest pitch of the series, Karun Nair’s resilient half-century—his first since the iconic unbeaten 303 in 2017—proved vital in stabilizing India after England’s pacers struck hard on Day 1 of the 5th Test at The Oval. India finished at 204/6 at stumps, with Nair (53*) and Washington Sundar (21*) holding fort.
Morning Drama and Rain Interruption
India’s innings got off to a shaky start as Yashasvi Jaiswal (2 off 9) fell early to Gus Atkinson, who made an immediate impact in his first outing of the series. Atkinson trapped Jaiswal lbw in his second over, a decision overturned via DRS.
Soon after, KL Rahul (14 off 40) also departed, leaving India at 36/2 in the opening hour.
Despite the challenges, Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill steadied the ship, taking India to 72/2 at lunch, which came early due to a sudden downpour. By then, the pitch had already shown its green menace, offering seam but not extravagant swing.
Middle Session: England Edge Ahead
When play resumed, England made inroads again. India reached 85/3 as Gill departed after making a composed 35, and rain interrupted proceedings once more.
Sudharsan and Karun Nair were at the crease when the covers returned. Sudharsan was battling hard with a patient 28 off 84, while Nair was on 0 off 8 balls, just settling in.
Post-Tea Collapse
The third session belonged to England, as India’s middle order collapsed dramatically post-tea:
- Sai Sudharsan edged behind for 38
- Ravindra Jadeja fell cheaply
- Dhruv Jurel, promoted up the order, also failed to make an impact
Suddenly, India were tottering at 150/6, and England smelled blood.
Karun Nair Resists, Finds Support in Sundar
With the top and middle order wiped out, Karun Nair dug deep, showing grit and determination in challenging conditions. He finally reached a hard-earned fifty, his first 50+ score in Test cricket since his triple ton back in 2017.
Partnered by Washington Sundar, who played the ideal supporting role, Nair ensured there were no further wickets lost till stumps.

India: 204/6 (85 overs)
