New LinkedIn Survey Reveals: 8 Out of 10 Indian Professionals Feel Unprepared to Find a New Job in 2026
Hyderabad, January 09, 2026 — A recent research report from LinkedIn highlights a significant sense of uncertainty in India's job market as professionals gear up for 2026. According to the findings, 84% of Indian professionals (approximately 8 out of 10) feel unprepared to search for and secure a new role next year, despite strong interest in job switching.
The survey, part of LinkedIn's broader workforce and hiring insights released in early January 2026, points to several contributing factors:
- The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in recruitment processes
- Quickly evolving skill requirements for modern roles
- Heightened competition in a selective job market
LinkedIn data shows that the number of applicants per open role in India has more than doubled since early 2022, making the landscape far more challenging. Meanwhile, 76% of professionals report that finding a new job has become tougher over the past year, and nearly 74% of Indian recruiters say sourcing qualified talent has grown more difficult.
Interestingly, while many feel unprepared, ambition remains high: 72% of Indian professionals say they are actively seeking a new job in 2026. This contrast underscores a mix of aspiration and anxiety amid technological disruption.
AI as Both Challenge and Ally
The research also reveals a silver lining in AI adoption. 94% of Indian professionals plan to use AI tools during their job search, and 66% report that these tools boost their confidence in interviews. LinkedIn emphasizes that AI has evolved from a simple productivity aid to a key enabler for career navigation, helping candidates better understand role fit and skill translation.

The report notes shifting career patterns, with around 32% of Gen X professionals considering new functions or roles, and 32% of Gen Z exploring opportunities outside their current industry. Entrepreneurship is also on the rise, with "founder" emerging as one of the fastest-growing job titles on LinkedIn.
To support job seekers, LinkedIn's accompanying India Jobs on the Rise 2026 list highlights high-demand roles such as Prompt Engineer, AI Engineer, and Software Engineer, reflecting sustained need for AI and tech expertise, alongside growth in areas like sales, cybersecurity, and advisory functions.
Survey Methodology
The insights are drawn from the Consumer and Global HR Professionals Research, conducted by Censuswide in November 2025. It included 19,113 respondents (aged 18-79) who were working full-time/part-time or actively job-seeking, along with 6,554 global HR professionals.
