America’s Pulse: February 16, 2026 Update

Good morning America.

It’s Monday, February 16, 2026 and the country is buzzing with the usual Monday mix — big moves in Washington, fresh heartbreak & hope on the ice, another wave of very visible tech layoffs, and the feeling that everything is moving faster than most people can comfortably keep up with.

Here’s what’s really happening across the country today.

Top USA Story Right Now

Thousands March in Chicago After Latest Round of ICE Workplace Raids

The images are spreading extremely fast — long lines of workers being walked out of meat processing plants and warehouses in Illinois, Indiana and Iowa, hands zip-tied, many still wearing company aprons.

Google searches for “ICE raids Chicago 2026” “workplace immigration raids today” “can they take people from work”

are exploding since early Saturday morning.

People are angry, scared, and very confused.

“My cousin has been here 14 years. Pays taxes. Has three American kids. They just took him Friday morning from the plant. How is this okay?” — Luis, 31, warehouse worker, Cicero, IL

At the same time a very vocal group of people is saying exactly the opposite:

“Finally someone is enforcing the law. You come illegally → you get removed. Simple.” — comment under almost every viral video

Both sides are 100% convinced they are the ones being reasonable.

Washington & Politics Update

White House doubles down — “Mass deportation operation is not slowing”

The administration is not backing off even a little.

The Press Secretary this morning used the phrase “worst first” four times in six minutes when asked about the order of deportations.

At the same time very interesting behind-the-scenes reporting is coming out: Several senior people inside DHS are reportedly pushing to slow down the pace of family separations because they are worried about • massive PR damage • children ending up in already overcrowded emergency shelters • very bad optics during an election cycle

So far — the louder public message is winning.

Very quick side note that moved markets a tiny bit: The White House confirmed again today they are seriously looking at 15–25% tariffs on all goods coming from Mexico if the Mexican government does not “meaningfully cooperate” on border security.

Hollywood & Movies Buzz

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ opens HUGE — $193M global first weekend

The new Captain America movie absolutely crushed expectations.

Very important detail for people who follow the industry: This is the first Marvel movie since Endgame that opened over $180 million globally without any big China release.

Inside numbers people are talking about:

  • Friday + Saturday + Sunday = $124M domestic
  • Very strong Sunday hold (only -38% drop)
  • Insane repeat viewing from 18–34 males

Also trending very hard right now: people comparing Anthony Mackie’s performance to both Chris Evans and the comics version of Sam Wilson

Quick bonus movie note: The very violent, very funny crime comedy “A Nice Indian Boy” (yes, that’s the real title) starring Jonathan Groff and Karan Soni is quietly becoming the breakout indie hit of the winter — already almost 6× its budget.

American Sports Spotlight

USA Women’s Hockey pulls off miracle comeback vs Canada

Down 0–3 after two periods → USA scores four unanswered goals in the third period and wins in a shootout.

The country lost its mind.

Most searched hockey phrases in the last 18 hours:

  • “USA Canada hockey miracle”
  • “who scored the winner USA Canada”
  • “Lavery shootout goal gif”

Laverys celebration after the shootout winner is already a meme template everywhere.

Also very quietly: Caitlin Clark dropped 41 points, 12 assists, 8 rebounds in her second WNBA preseason game → people are already calling this coming season possibly the most watched women’s basketball season in American history.

Real Jobs & Hiring Picture

January jobs report revised DOWN sharply — again

Original number: +214,000 jobs in January Revised today: only +138,000

This is now the third month in a row the jobs number got revised significantly lower 30–45 days later.

Most common thing people are saying online and in real life:

“They keep telling us the economy is fine… then two months later they say ‘actually it was much weaker’ — why should we believe the first number?” — 38-year-old logistics manager from Columbus, OH

Bright spot that actually matters: Healthcare and home health aide jobs are still growing very steadily — +68,000 in January (final number).

Layoff Alert – Latest Cuts

Another brutal week — ~19,000 announced layoffs in 7 days

Biggest names from the last week:

  • Amazon — 9,000 more (mostly corporate, AWS, Devices)
  • Cisco — 6,000 (second big round in 9 months)
  • Wayfair — 1,700 (mostly corporate + marketing)
  • Klarna — 800 (fintech pain continues)
  • Several smaller banks — ~1,400 combined

Most painful Google searches right now:

  • “how long does severance last”
  • “unemployment benefits by state”
  • “jobs hiring right now near me”

Very common sentence people are writing everywhere:

“I thought the layoffs were over in 2024… guess not.”

Wall Street Right Now

Mixed day — Tech still bleeding • Defensive stocks holding up

Today’s closes:

  • Dow +0.7%
  • S&P 500 +0.1%
  • Nasdaq –0.9%

Biggest stories people are watching:

  • Nvidia down another 3.7% (people scared about how much AI spending is really left)
  • Walmart +2.1% (people moving money into “safe” consumer stocks)
  • Defense stocks (Lockheed, Northrop) quietly making new highs again

Most honest sentence of the day from a normal investor:

“I have no idea what’s going to happen… so I just keep buying the boring stuff that people always need.” — 44-year-old teacher & part-time investor, Raleigh, NC

That’s the real picture today — loud politics, very emotional immigration stories, sports giving us something to cheer about, and the same uneasy feeling in the job market and tech world that just refuses to go away.

Stay warm out there, keep taking care of each other, and we’ll do this again tomorrow.

See you in the morning, America.
