T20 World Cup 2026 Shock: Pakistan Skips India Match

Hyderabad, February 2, 2026 – In a dramatic escalation of tensions surrounding the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, the Government of Pakistan has officially confirmed that the national cricket team will participate in the tournament but will boycott their scheduled group-stage match against India.

The decision was communicated through an official government statement: “The Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan grants approval to the Pakistan Cricket Team to participate in the ICC World T20 2026, however, the Pakistan Cricket Team shall not take the field in the match scheduled on 15th February 2026 against India.”

This boycott comes amid ongoing political and security-related disputes that have already forced the ICC to relocate all Pakistan group-stage matches—including the high-profile India clash—to Colombo, Sri Lanka. Pakistan’s other group opponents remain the Netherlands (February 7), USA (February 10), and Namibia (February 18), all also scheduled in Sri Lanka.

According to ICC playing conditions, by refusing to play the match, Pakistan will automatically forfeit the two points on offer, and their net run rate will suffer accordingly. India will be awarded the full two points without taking the field.

The boycott follows repeated criticisms from Pakistan officials regarding what they describe as “double standards” by the ICC, particularly after the board’s decision to exclude Bangladesh from the tournament over their refusal to play matches in India. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi had earlier indicated that the government would review participation if concerns about impartiality were not addressed.

The International Cricket Council has issued a brief response stating that it is “reviewing the matter urgently” and has urged both boards to engage in dialogue to avoid further disruption. Industry estimates suggest the India-Pakistan match typically generates hundreds of millions of dollars in global broadcast, digital, and sponsorship revenue for the ICC, making this boycott a significant financial as well as sporting blow.

The match was originally set to take place at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. No immediate indication has been given whether Pakistan will face additional sanctions beyond the automatic forfeiture of points.

Further updates are expected from the PCB and ICC in the coming hours as the cricketing world reacts to this unprecedented development.
