National Farmers’ Day 2025: NRIs Join India in Honouring Annadatas on Chaudhary Charan Singh’s Birth Anniversary

New Delhi, December 23, 2025 – As India celebrates National Farmers’ Day (Kisan Diwas) today, millions of Non-Resident Indians across the USA, Canada, UK, UAE, Australia, and beyond are joining in to pay heartfelt tribute to the country’s farmers – our annadatas who tirelessly feed the nation. This special day also marks the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister and iconic farmers’ leader Bharat Ratna Chaudhary Charan Singh, whose legacy continues to inspire rural empowerment worldwide.

Observed every year on December 23, National Farmers’ Day was officially declared in 2001 to recognise the backbone of India’s economy. Born on this day in 1902 in a farmer’s family in Uttar Pradesh, Chaudhary Charan Singh served as India’s Prime Minister from 1979-1980 and was a lifelong champion of agricultural reforms and rural welfare. Known as the “Messiah of Farmers,” he was honoured posthumously with the Bharat Ratna in March this year.

Chaudhary Charan Singh: An Inspiration for Rural India and the Global Diaspora

A freedom fighter and visionary politician, Chaudhary Charan Singh pioneered land reforms, farmer debt relief, and rural development policies that lifted millions out of poverty. His famous words – “The progress of the nation is impossible without improving the lives of farmers” – resonate deeply with NRIs who maintain strong ties to their agricultural roots back home.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a tribute today: “Humble salute to Bharat Ratna Chaudhary Charan Singh ji on his birth anniversary. The nation will forever remember his unparalleled contribution as a true champion of the poor and farmers.”

Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan added: “Millions of salutes to the Messiah of Farmers, Bharat Ratna Chaudhary Charan Singh ji. Heartfelt greetings to all farmer brothers and sisters on National Farmers’ Day!”

Why This Day Matters to the NRI Community

For many NRIs, especially those from Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and other agrarian states, Kisan Diwas is a moment of pride and reflection. While living abroad, they often support family farms back home or contribute to rural development through remittances and philanthropy. The day highlights ongoing challenges like climate change, rising costs, and the need for modern technology – issues that NRIs actively address through investments in agri-tech startups and sustainable farming initiatives.

Government schemes such as PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi (providing direct income support), crop insurance, and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) are also benefiting NRI-linked families in villages. Though no official theme was announced for 2025, the focus remains on empowering farmers for a self-reliant (Atmanirbhar) India.

How NRIs and Global Indians Are Celebrating

  • Virtual events and webinars organised by Indian associations in the US, UK, and Gulf countries discussing farmer welfare and rural entrepreneurship.
  • Social media campaigns with #KisanDiwas2025 and #JaiKisan trending among the diaspora.
  • Community gatherings sharing stories of ancestral farming heritage and pledging support for Indian agriculture.
  • Schools run by NRI communities teaching children about India’s agricultural legacy and Chaudhary Charan Singh’s contributions.

This day reminds us all – whether in India or abroad – that farmers are the foundation of our food security and cultural identity.
