On Saturday, 8 August 2026, Verizon experienced a widespread but temporary outage affecting wireless voice services for customers in multiple parts of the United States. Outage-tracking site Downdetector logged more than 12,000 reports at its peak (some sources noted over 13,000), with the vast majority related to problems making or receiving phone calls.
What happened
- Timing: reports began surging in the mid-to-late afternoon Eastern Time (around 3:00–3:30 p.m. ET), peaking roughly an hour later.
- Impact: primarily voice calling — many customers could not place or receive calls, while text messaging and mobile data generally kept working.
- Affected areas: issues were reported across various regions, with higher concentrations in major metros including New York, Los Angeles, Boston and Chicago, on the East Coast and in the Midwest.
- Secondary effects: some customers on AT&T and T-Mobile also reported intermittent call failures, likely because calls involving Verizon numbers were impacted.
Verizon confirmed the issue early, saying engineers were working on a problem affecting voice services for wireless customers in some parts of the U.S., and later reported progress while recommending affected users restart their devices.
Resolution and current status
By early evening (shortly after 6 p.m. ET), Verizon announced the issue had been resolved, apologised for the inconvenience and advised any customers still affected to restart their phones. Downdetector reports dropped sharply afterward. No official root cause has been publicly detailed. Service has been restored for the majority of customers; anyone still having trouble (including on Verizon MVNOs such as Visible) should restart their device and check the official Verizon Network Status page. The outage was notable but significantly smaller than some of Verizon’s larger disruptions earlier in 2026.
