Election Commission Allots ‘Whistle’ Symbol to Thalapathy Vijay’s TVK for 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections
In a major boost for actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay‘s political debut, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially allotted the ‘Whistle’ symbol to his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
The announcement came on January 22, 2026, just months ahead of the keenly anticipated polls, expected in April or May 2026. TVK, founded by Vijay in February 2024 as a registered but unrecognised political party, had applied for a common election symbol under the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968. The party submitted its request in November 2025, backed by financial reports and a list of preferred symbols, with ‘Whistle’ topping the choices.
The ‘Whistle’ holds special significance for Vijay’s fans, drawing inspiration from his 2019 blockbuster film Bigil, where the whistle symbolized motivation, unity, and victory. This iconic symbol is expected to aid strong voter recognition and grassroots mobilization across Tamil Nadu’s 234 Assembly constituencies, as TVK plans to contest all seats independently without alliances with major parties like DMK or AIADMK.
In the same ECI order, actor Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) was allotted the ‘Battery Torch’ (or Torch Light) symbol, continuing its previous association.
TVK has positioned itself as a fresh, youth-centric alternative in Tamil Nadu politics, focusing on good governance, anti-corruption, empowerment of the younger generation, and inclusive development. Supporters and cadres have erupted in celebrations, with the familiar ‘whistle’ rallying cry from Vijay’s films now set to echo in the political arena.
This development marks a crucial milestone in Thalapathy Vijay‘s journey from superstar to serious political contender, providing TVK with a clear, memorable visual identity ahead of what promises to be a fiercely competitive 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
