Navratri fasting (October 12-20, 2026) is one of the most sacred food observances in Hindu culture. Many NRIs abroad observe vrat (partial fasting) — eating only farali (fasting-permitted) foods. This guide covers the traditional fasting rules + delicious recipes to make the 9 days spiritually rich AND food-satisfying.
Traditional Navratri Fasting Rules
Not everyone fasts strictly. Common observance levels:
- Nirjala (waterless) — extreme, only for spiritually advanced practitioners
- Phalahar — only fruits + milk + water
- One-meal-a-day — only farali foods during a single meal at midday/evening
- Two-meal-farali — most common, most kids-friendly for NRI households
Rules for what's allowed:
- NO grains (rice, wheat), NO regular salt (use rock salt/sendha namak)
- NO onion, garlic, non-vegetarian
- ALLOWED: potato, sweet potato, sabudana (tapioca), kuttu (buckwheat), singhara (water chestnut), samak (barnyard millet), yogurt, milk, ghee, rock salt, fruits, dry fruits
