India's 77th Republic Day Parade Rehearsals Blend Tradition and Tech Rehearsals in New Delhi

India's preparations for the 77th Republic Day on January 26, 2026, are in full swing, with rehearsals at Kartavya Path in New Delhi blending timeless military tradition with cutting-edge technology and cultural vibrancy. The event, themed around the 150th anniversary of the national song Vande Mataram, promises a spectacular showcase of India's armed forces, indigenous innovations, and deepening international partnerships.

Rehearsals have captured public attention through viral videos and images of crisp marching contingents, including the Indian Navy's disciplined formations and the Indian Army's innovative displays. A standout feature is the debut of the Bhairav Light Commando Battalion (also referred to as Bhairav Commandos), a newly raised unit formed less than a year ago, specially trained for operations in extreme terrains and high-altitude borders. This light infantry battalion emphasizes agility, drone integration, and rapid deployment, symbolizing the Army's shift toward modern, high-impact warfare.

Adding to the technological edge, the parade rehearsals highlight next-generation indigenous platforms in a first-of-its-kind phased battle array formation. This sequence mimics real combat scenarios, starting with high-mobility reconnaissance vehicles equipped with battlefield surveillance radars (BFSR) and anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM), followed by assets like T-90 and Arjun main battle tanks, BMP-II infantry fighting vehicles, NAMIS-II Nag missile systems, Dhanush and ATAGS artillery, BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, Akash and MRSAM air defense systems, Drone Shakti units, robotic mules (unmanned ground vehicles or UGVs), and all-terrain vehicles. Robotic dogs—advanced quadruped unmanned systems mounted with rifles or sensors—have drawn particular interest, demonstrating India's push for unmanned and autonomous technologies in defense.

Complementing the high-tech displays is a unique animal contingent making its mark, featuring Zanskar ponies, double-humped Bactrian camels, trained military dogs (including indigenous breeds like Mudhol Hound, Rampur Hound, Chippiparai, Kombai, and Rajapalayam), and raptor eagles (birds of prey for operational roles). This contingent underscores the enduring role of animals in military logistics and operations, especially in rugged terrains, while adding a traditional touch.

The Indian Army's contingents include marching units from regiments such as Scouts, Rajput, Assam, JAK LI, Artillery, and Ladakh Scouts, often performing in the energetic 'Uncha Kadam' style. The Navy and Air Force contingents join with precise drills, while cultural elements infuse energy—traditional regiments have been seen syncing marches to popular Bollywood tunes during practice sessions.

A historic diplomatic highlight this year is the presence of European Union leaders as chief guests: European Council President António Luís Santos da Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This first-ever joint appearance by the EU's top officials marks a significant milestone in India-EU relations. They arrive for a three-day state visit from January 25-27, 2026, attending the Republic Day parade on January 26 before co-chairing the 16th India-EU Summit in New Delhi on January 27 with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The summit aims to consolidate the strategic partnership, with discussions likely focusing on advancing cooperation in trade, defense, technology, and possibly concluding negotiations on a long-pending bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

The full parade on January 26 will feature 18 marching contingents, 13 bands, 30 tableaux (from states, Union Territories, ministries, and services), a flypast of 29 aircraft (including Rafale, Su-30MKI, MiG-29, Apache, LCH Prachand, and others), and vibrant cultural performances, including a special dance spectacle by 2,500 artistes honoring Vande Mataram.

As rehearsals continue amid Delhi's winter fog, the 77th Republic Day celebrations embody India's fusion of heritage, military prowess, and forward-looking innovation—poised to inspire national pride and global admiration.
