Big Blow for India: Harshit Rana Out, Siraj In

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has suffered an early setback for defending champions India, with young fast-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana ruled out of the tournament due to a serious knee injury.

The 24-year-old Delhi pacer sustained a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee during India’s warm-up match against South Africa on February 4 in Navi Mumbai. Rana bowled just one over, conceding 16 runs, before walking off the field in discomfort. He was later seen holding his knee and required scans, which confirmed the tear. Following consultations with specialists—including Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala—the BCCI medical team declared him unfit for the tournament, with surgery recommended and a lengthy recovery period expected.

Captain Suryakumar Yadav had expressed early concerns, noting after the warm-up that Rana “doesn’t look good” and the team would have clarity soon. The injury occurred just days before India’s campaign opener, forcing a swift replacement.

In a prompt move, the BCCI named veteran pacer Mohammed Siraj as Rana’s replacement, with approval from the ICC Event Technical Committee. Siraj, who joins the squad in Mumbai, brings significant experience with 45 Tests, 50 ODIs, and 16 T20Is for India. Known for his fiery pace and strong IPL performances, the 31-year-old last played a T20I in 2024 but adds depth and aggression to India’s bowling attack alongside Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and others.

India’s updated squad now includes: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Ishan Kishan (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Rinku Singh, Washington Sundar.

The injury has drawn widespread support from fans, teammates, and IPL franchises, who have wished Rana a speedy recovery. Many see Siraj’s inclusion as a boost of experience for the high-stakes tournament co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

India, as defending champions and co-hosts, begin their title defense in Group A against the United States in the tournament opener on Saturday, February 7, at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 PM IST, setting the stage for an exciting start to the campaign under Suryakumar’s leadership.

This development underscores the fine margins in international cricket, where injuries can reshape strategies, but India’s pace resources remain formidable with Siraj stepping in. All eyes will be on the Men in Blue as they aim to defend their crown starting this weekend.
