Brazil’s Interest in India’s Akash Air Defense System: A Proud Moment for NRIs

New Delhi, July 1, 2025 – Brazil’s keen interest in acquiring India’s indigenous Akash air defense system marks a proud milestone for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) worldwide, showcasing India’s growing prowess in global defense innovation. P. Kumaran, Secretary (East) in India’s Ministry of External Affairs, announced this development ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro from July 5-8, 2025.

Akash: India’s Homegrown Defense Marvel

For NRIs, the Akash surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is a symbol of India’s technological self-reliance. Its stellar performance during Operation Sindoor (May 7-10, 2025) demonstrated its capability, neutralizing Chinese and Turkish-made drones deployed by Pakistan with 100% accuracy. The AI-powered Akashteer variant, in particular, intercepted threats silently and efficiently, cementing India’s reputation as a defense innovator.

With a range of 25–45 km and the ability to engage targets at altitudes up to 20 km, Akash counters fighter jets, drones, and cruise missiles. Powered by a ramjet-rocket system, it reaches speeds of Mach 1.8 to 2.5, making it a game-changer in modern warfare.

“Brazil’s interest in procuring and co-producing the Akash system reflects confidence in India’s defense capabilities,” Kumaran said during a New Delhi briefing. For NRIs, this is a moment of pride, as India’s “Make in India” initiative gains global traction.

Deepening India-Brazil Ties: Opportunities for NRIs

This potential deal strengthens India-Brazil defense collaboration, opening avenues for NRIs in both nations. Brazil is exploring partnerships in secure communication systems, Garuda artillery, coastal surveillance, offshore patrol vessels, and Scorpene-class submarine maintenance. Brazilian firms like Taurus Armas and Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos (CBC) are investing in India, creating opportunities for NRI professionals in defense and manufacturing.

Brazil’s aerospace leader, Embraer, may collaborate on reconnaissance and airborne warning systems, leveraging India’s expertise. “The synergy between India’s innovation and Brazil’s aerospace strength is exciting,” Kumaran noted, signaling potential job and investment prospects for NRIs in these sectors.

BRICS Summit: A Platform for India’s Global Rise

PM Modi’s upcoming visit to Brazil for the BRICS Summit will likely finalize these agreements. The summit, attended by leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and other members, will also address counter-terrorism and AI. The anticipated denouncement of the recent Pahalgam attack underscores India’s firm stance, resonating with NRIs advocating for global security.

Why Akash Matters to NRIs

The Akash system’s success highlights India’s ability to compete with global defense giants, a point of pride for the diaspora. Posts on X reflect excitement among NRIs, with many noting Brazil’s preference for Akash over other systems as a testament to India’s innovation. For NRIs in Brazil, this deal could foster closer community ties and business opportunities.

A Boost for ‘Make in India’ and NRI Pride

Brazil’s interest in co-producing Akash aligns with India’s goal to become a defense export hub. Collaborative ventures could lead to cutting-edge innovations, offering NRIs in tech and defense sectors a chance to contribute to India’s growth story. As India strengthens its global footprint, NRIs can take pride in their homeland’s rise as a defense powerhouse.
