Dilip Vengsarkar Urges Jasprit Bumrah to Skip IPL 2025

Mumbai, August 11, 2025 – Former Indian cricket captain and 1983 World Cup winner Dilip Vengsarkar has sparked a heated debate in the cricketing world with his bold comments on Jasprit Bumrah’s workload management and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors’ approach. In an exclusive interview with The Times of India, Vengsarkar emphasized that Bumrah should have skipped the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 to prioritize the high-stakes Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test series against England, which ended in a 2-2 draw. He also took a swipe at the selectors, particularly chief selector Ajit Agarkar, for failing to groom future talent and overemphasizing the IPL.

Bumrah’s Workload: A Missed Opportunity?

Jasprit Bumrah, India’s pace spearhead, played only three of the five Tests in the recently concluded India vs. England series due to workload management concerns. Despite his stellar performance, claiming 14 wickets with two five-wicket hauls in the matches he played, his absence in the second Test at Edgbaston and the final Test at The Oval drew criticism from fans and former cricketers alike. Vengsarkar, a former chief selector, believes that Bumrah’s participation in IPL 2025, where he played 12 matches for Mumbai Indians and took 18 wickets, compromised his readiness for the Test series.

“Considering the importance of the India versus England Test series and his fragile back, Bumrah should have been told by the BCCI, selectors, and the Indian team management to miss IPL 2025,” Vengsarkar stated. “If I were the chief selector, I would have convinced Mukesh Ambani (Mumbai Indians owner) and Bumrah to prioritize the England series, or at least play fewer IPL matches. I’m sure they would have agreed.”

Vengsarkar highlighted that Test cricket performances leave a lasting legacy, unlike IPL achievements. “Who remembers the runs and wickets taken in the IPL? People will remember Mohammed Siraj’s lion-hearted performance (23 wickets), Shubman Gill’s 754 runs, KL Rahul’s 532 runs, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 411 runs, and Rishabh Pant’s 479 runs in this series,” he remarked, underscoring the significance of the Test series.

Defending Bumrah’s Commitment

While critical of the decision to allow Bumrah to play in the IPL, Vengsarkar defended the pacer’s commitment to Indian cricket. Bumrah, who underwent back surgery in recent years, bowled 119.4 overs in the three Tests he played, showcasing his dedication despite a vulnerable physical condition. “You can’t blame Bumrah for missing matches at times. His back is vulnerable, and we must be cautious with him. You can’t question his commitment to the country,” Vengsarkar said, urging fans and critics to consider the pacer’s health.

Critique of BCCI Selectors

Vengsarkar didn’t hold back on his criticism of the BCCI selectors, accusing them of lacking vision in grooming future talent. He argued that the board’s overemphasis on the IPL has led to a neglect of long-term player development, particularly in Test cricket. “Having IPL should not be the only achievement,” he stated, slamming the selectors for not preparing a suitable successor for former captain Rohit Sharma and overlooking talents like Sarfaraz Khan.

He also expressed disappointment with the selectors’ handling of Bumrah’s schedule, suggesting they should have prioritized national duty over franchise cricket. “If a player is fit and available, he must be part of every game. National duty should take precedence,” Vengsarkar asserted, criticizing the trend of players “picking and choosing” Test matches.

The Bigger Picture: Test Cricket vs. IPL

Vengsarkar’s comments come at a time when the balance between franchise cricket and international commitments is a growing concern. The IPL, owned by powerful franchises like Mukesh Ambani’s Mumbai Indians, often sees India’s top players participating despite grueling international schedules. Vengsarkar’s suggestion to convince Ambani to rest Bumrah highlights the delicate relationship between the BCCI, team management, and IPL franchises.

The former captain also lamented the absence of quality fast bowlers in Indian cricket, a factor he believes is hurting the team’s international performance. “I cannot see any quality bowler,” he remarked, emphasizing the need to nurture young talent for Test cricket.

Looking Ahead

As India prepares for future international assignments, Vengsarkar’s remarks serve as a wake-up call for the BCCI and selectors to prioritize Test cricket and player welfare. With Bumrah expected to return fully fit after adequate rest, fans hope to see him lead India’s pace attack in upcoming series. Meanwhile, Vengsarkar’s call for a strategic overhaul in selection policies could spark further discussions on balancing IPL commitments with national duties.
