Shocking Las Vegas Biolab Raid: Chinese National with Reedley Links Held – Biosecurity Alert for NRIs in the USA

Las Vegas, Nevada – February 5, 2026 – In a development raising serious biosecurity and public health concerns, US authorities raided a residential property in northeast Las Vegas on January 31, 2026, seizing over 1,000 vials and samples of unknown biological materials along with laboratory equipment. The case is directly linked to Jia Bei Zhu (also known as Jesse Zhu or David He), a Chinese national currently in federal custody, echoing the controversial 2022-2023 unlicensed biolab scandal in Reedley, California.

For Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) living, working, or traveling in the United States, this incident highlights ongoing risks related to unregulated biological materials, potential public health threats, and foreign-linked operations on American soil.

What Was Found in the Las Vegas Raid?

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) SWAT, Hazmat teams, and the FBI executed the raid on a home on Sugar Springs Drive following a tip about suspicious activity. Inside a locked garage, investigators discovered:

  • Multiple refrigerators and freezers filled with vials of unknown liquids
  • Gallon-sized containers with unidentified substances
  • Centrifuge, biosafety hood, and other lab equipment

More than 1,000 samples were transported to an FBI laboratory for testing to detect any hazardous pathogens. Authorities have not yet confirmed the presence of active infectious agents such as COVID-19, hepatitis, malaria, or others. No immediate public health emergency has been declared, but testing is ongoing.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill described the scene as highly complex, requiring “careful assessment.” FBI officials have promised evidence-based updates to avoid panic.

Arrest and Property Owner

55-year-old Ori Solomon, the property manager, was arrested on charges including felony hazardous waste disposal and federal firearms violations. Court documents note that at least two individuals reportedly fell ill after exposure to materials in the garage.

The property is owned by an LLC linked to Jia Bei Zhu, who faces ongoing federal charges related to the Reedley case. In Reedley, authorities found thousands of vials (some labeled with HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, hepatitis, etc.), unlabeled samples, and nearly 1,000 genetically engineered mice capable of carrying human pathogens. A House Select Committee on the CCP report raised alarms about poor biosafety practices and alleged ties to Chinese entities.

Why This Matters to NRIs

  • Public Health & Travel Concerns: NRIs frequently travel between India and the US. Any confirmed pathogen presence could impact airport screenings, visa processes, or community health.
  • National Security & Foreign Influence: The involvement of a Chinese national with reported links to entities under scrutiny amplifies broader concerns about unregulated labs and biosecurity gaps in the US.
  • Safety of Indian Diaspora: With large NRI populations in California, Nevada, and other states, such incidents underscore the need for stronger oversight to protect residents from accidental exposure or misuse of biological materials.

The FBI has expanded its investigation, including a return visit to the former Reedley site. Bipartisan lawmakers have introduced legislation (Preventing Illegal Laboratories and Protecting Public Health Act of 2025) to tighten controls on such facilities.
