15 Years of Dhoni’s Six: 2011 World Cup Glory

Mumbai, April 2, 2026 — Exactly 15 years ago, on April 2, 2011, at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Mahendra Singh Dhoni smashed a towering six into the Mumbai night sky, sealing India’s second ICC Cricket World Cup title and ending a 28-year wait since Kapil Dev’s heroes lifted the trophy in 1983.

It was more than just a cricket match. It was a moment that united a billion hearts, fulfilled a generation’s dream, and gave the ultimate gift to the man who had carried Indian cricket on his shoulders for over two decades — Sachin Tendulkar.

The Final: A Thriller at Wankhede

Sri Lanka, batting first after winning the toss, posted a competitive 274/6 in 50 overs. Mahela Jayawardene played a magnificent unbeaten knock of 103 off 88 balls, while Kumar Sangakkara contributed 48. For India, Yuvraj Singh was the pick of the bowlers with 2/49, showcasing the all-round brilliance that earned him the Player of the Tournament award.

Chasing 275, India lost early wickets but found stability through Gautam Gambhir’s gritty 97 off 122 balls. When Gambhir fell at 223/4, India still needed 52 runs off 60 balls. The pressure was immense.

Then stepped up Captain Cool — MS Dhoni. Promoted ahead of Yuvraj Singh on the advice of Sachin Tendulkar, Dhoni walked in and played one of the most composed innings under pressure in World Cup history. He remained unbeaten on 91 off 79 balls, including two massive sixes, guiding India to victory with 6 wickets in hand and 10 balls to spare.

The winning moment came in the 49th over. Facing Nuwan Kulasekara, Dhoni danced down the track and lofted the ball high over long-on. As the white ball disappeared into the stands, commentator Ravi Shastri famously roared: “Dhoni finishes off in style! A magnificent strike into the crowd! India lift the World Cup after 28 years!”

Dhoni held his pose for a split second, twirled his bat, and was mobbed by his teammates as fireworks lit up the Wankhede sky. Yuvraj Singh, who had been battling illness and immense pressure throughout the tournament, was among the first to embrace him.

A Team Effort Built on Emotion

The 2011 World Cup was never just about one match. It was a campaign filled with emotion:

  • Sachin Tendulkar’s quest for the elusive World Cup title after 21 years.
  • Yuvraj Singh’s heroic all-round performances, including the semi-final against Pakistan, while privately battling a serious illness.
  • Virat KohliSuresh RainaZaheer Khan, and the entire squad playing with one mission — to win it for Sachin and for India.

After the match, an emotional Sachin Tendulkar said: “Winning the World Cup is the proudest moment of my life. Thanks to my teammates. Without them, nothing would have happened. I couldn’t control my tears of joy.”

Gautam Gambhir, whose near-century laid the foundation, dedicated the win to Sachin: “All credit goes to Sachin Tendulkar. We played for him.”

Yuvraj Singh, the Player of the Series, later reflected that the team played to lift the burden off Tendulkar’s shoulders.

Nationwide Celebrations and Lasting Legacy

As soon as Dhoni hit that six, India erupted in unprecedented joy. Streets across the country filled with firecrackers, honking cars, and people hugging strangers. In Mumbai, fans danced late into the night near the Gateway of India and Marine Drive.

The victory parade a few days later saw millions lining the streets as the team, led by Dhoni holding the glittering trophy aloft, paraded through the city on an open bus.

Fifteen years on, the memories remain fresh. That night at Wankhede is still replayed in living rooms, discussed in cricket debates, and cherished as one of the greatest moments in Indian sporting history.

It marked the rise of a new generation under Dhoni’s calm leadership and cemented India’s status as a cricket superpower. For millions of Indians, especially those who grew up watching Sachin, it was the perfect fairytale ending.

Jai Hind! Jai Bharat! Dhoni! Dhoni! Dhoni!
