Last verified: August 30, 2026. The paperwork side of NRI life in the USA — Indian passports, OCI, PIO conversion, e-arrival cards, minor-child rules — has quietly seen more change in 2026 than in the previous five years combined. This hub keeps every checklist in one place.

What Actually Changed in 2026

  • e-OCI card — fresh OCI registrations produce a digital card only, from July 8, 2026. The old requirement to buy a fresh booklet after each post-20 passport renewal is gone.
  • e-Arrival card — all travellers to India (OCI included) must complete the digital arrivals form online before boarding. Physical disembarkation forms permanently discontinued at Indian airports.
  • PIO cards decommissioned — formal end January 1, 2026. Holders must convert to OCI.
  • Minor passport dual-nationality rule — Citizenship (Amendment) Rules 2026 (April 30) formalise the ban on minors holding both an Indian passport and a foreign passport simultaneously.
  • OCI in-country application — from July 17, 2026, the RC / RP requirement dropped in favour of a single long-duration-visa condition (3+ months validity).

Passport, OCI, and PIO

  • e-OCI Card — What Every US-Based OCI Holder Must Do in 2026 (end of booklet re-issuance, 90-day passport-update window, USD 25 late penalty)
  • PIO to OCI Conversion — The 2026 Rescue Guide (in-country RC/RP requirement removal, consulate timelines, VFS process)
  • US-Born Children, Indian Passports, and the 2026 Rules (dual-passport prohibition for minors, surrender certificate, minor OCI)

Travel to India

  • Before You Fly to India This Diwali — 2026 Document Checklist for NRI Families (mandatory e-arrival card, OCI-passport sync, minors' documents, US re-entry, duty-free / gold-carry limits)

US Consular Processing and Visa Stamping

  • US Visa Stamping in India 2026 (Dropbox eligibility narrowed, consulate-wise wait times, third-country stamping restrictions)
  • B1/B2 Visa for Indian Parents Visiting NRI Children 2026
  • NRI Parent Visa Sponsorship 2026 — US, UK, Canada, Australia Compared

Two Rules Most Families Still Get Wrong

  1. The 90-day passport-update rule. When you renew your US passport, update your OCI record online within 90 days. Miss it and you pay a USD 25 late penalty per delayed month. Airline check-in staff sometimes deny boarding without a synced record.
  2. The minor dual-passport ban. If your US-born child was issued an Indian passport when younger and later a US passport, the Indian passport must be formally surrendered — the surrender certificate is what allows onward OCI issuance. Airlines and Indian immigration are enforcing this at the gate.

Timing — What to Do Before Diwali Travel

  1. At least 60 days out: verify OCI-passport record sync; if renewed, file the online update.
  2. 30 days out: check all family passports have 6+ months validity from return date.
  3. 7 days out: complete e-Arrival card for every travelling family member. Print or screenshot the confirmation.
  4. Departure day: carry US green card / valid US visa alongside the Indian passport / OCI as re-entry documentation.

Rules and consulate procedures change quickly. Always confirm with ociservices.gov.in, mha.gov.in, and your local Indian consulate before making irreversible plans.
