Diwali 2026: Complete 5-Day Festival Guide

Diwali 2026: Complete 5-Day Festival Guide

Introduction: When the Universe Lights a Lamp

Every year, there comes a night when the stars seem to touch the Earth. Millions of oil lamps glow against the darkness, the sweet scent of marigolds and incense fills the air, and prayers mingle with laughter. That night is Diwali — or Deepavali, the Festival of Lights — the brightest celebration in the Hindu calendar.

Diwali 2026 spreads its glow over five beautiful days: Friday, November 6 to Tuesday, November 10, 2026, with the grand Lakshmi Puja on Sunday, November 8, 2026 — the Amavasya (new moon) of the holy month of Kartik.

Diwali is not just one story — it weaves many together. It celebrates Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya, Goddess Lakshmi’s blessings, Lord Krishna’s victory over Narakasura, Lord Mahavira’s moksha, and the Pandavas’ homecoming. Each tradition finds its own light in Diwali, because at its heart, it is the eternal victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

At NRI Globe, we bring you a complete devotional companion for the entire festival — day by day, story by story, ritual by ritual — so you can celebrate with devotion even from abroad.

Why Is Diwali Celebrated? The Sacred Stories

Story 1: Lord Rama’s Triumphant Return to Ayodhya After 14 years of exile, battles, and the defeat of Ravana on Dussehra, Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana returned to Ayodhya on the Amavasya night of Kartik. The people of Ayodhya lit thousands of lamps to welcome their beloved king, turning the darkest night into a sea of light. This is why we still light diyas — to welcome dharma and push away darkness.

Story 2: Goddess Lakshmi’s Visit on New Moon Night On Kartik Amavasya, Goddess Lakshmi roams the earth, blessing clean, well-lit homes filled with devotion. She brings wealth, health, happiness, and prosperity. That’s why deep cleaning, fresh rangoli, and marigold decorations are acts of love and invitation to Maa Lakshmi.

Story 3: Lord Krishna’s Victory over Narakasura (Choti Diwali) The demon Narakasura terrorized the worlds until Lord Krishna, with Satyabhama, defeated him. Before dying, Narakasura asked that his death be celebrated with joy. The dawn oil bath (Abhyanga Snan) on Choti Diwali symbolizes cleansing away evil and sins.

Story 4: Goddess Lakshmi Emerges from Samudra Manthan During the cosmic churning of the ocean, Lakshmi rose on a lotus, choosing Lord Vishnu as her eternal consort. Diwali invokes this divine union of abundance and preservation.

 DAY 1 — DHANTERAS (November 6, 2026, Friday)

Dhantrayodashi: Welcoming Wealth & Health Dhanteras marks the start of Diwali. “Dhan” means wealth and “Teras” refers to the 13th lunar day.
