The Day at a Glance

- Locate a 3-5 gallon plastic bucket, large stainless steel tub, or plastic storage bin.
- Reserve a bathroom, balcony, or garage area with drainage nearby.
- Prepare a garden bed, potting pot, or outdoor planter to receive the dissolved clay.
Sept 25 morning
- Wake before sunrise. Bathe. Wear clean clothes.
- Perform final full aarti — offer modaks, durva grass, flowers, incense.
- Chant "Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya" (Come again next year, come sooner!).
Sept 25 afternoon/evening — the visarjan
- Fill your container with lukewarm water — cold water slows clay dissolution.
- Gently remove any non-biodegradable decorations from the idol: plastic ornaments, thermocol, synthetic fabric, metal jewelry. Compost natural flowers separately.
- Lower the idol slowly into the water while chanting. Do not force it under.
- Let it settle. Clay takes 6-24 hours to break down fully. Stir gently every few hours.
- Once dissolved, pour the top water gently over garden plants or into a garden bed. The clay slurry is nutrient-rich and blesses the soil.
- Collect the settled clay residue and mix it into a potting pot or garden patch.
Do NOT
- Pour clay slurry down a sink or storm drain — clogs plumbing, violates municipal water rules.
- Add soap, detergent, or hot water to speed dissolution.
- Break the idol to force it apart — dissolves poorly and disrespects the tradition.
