Hyderabad, August 31, 2025 – The Telugu film industry, popularly known as Tollywood, is enveloped in grief following the passing of Allu Kanakaratnam, the revered matriarch of the Allu-Konidela family, on August 30, 2025. She breathed her last at 1:45 AM at her Hyderabad residence, aged 94, due to age-related health issues. As the widow of legendary actor and Padma Shri awardee Allu Ramalingaiah and mother of renowned producer Allu Aravind, Kanakaratnam was the cherished grandmother of Tollywood superstars Allu Arjun and Ram Charan. Her death marks the end of an era for one of Telugu cinema’s most influential families.

A Life of Love and Legacy

Allu Kanakaratnam was a pillar of strength for the Allu-Konidela family, known for her unwavering support and the values of love, courage, and unity she instilled in her children and grandchildren. Though she remained largely out of the public eye, her presence was deeply felt within the family, which has shaped Telugu cinema for decades. Her husband, Allu Ramalingaiah, was a celebrated comedian and actor who appeared in over 1,000 films during his illustrious 50-year career. Their legacy continues through their son, Allu Aravind, a prominent producer, and their grandsons, Allu Arjun and Ram Charan, who are among the biggest stars in Indian cinema today.

Kanakaratnam’s passing was announced early on August 30, prompting an outpouring of grief from family, friends, and fans. Her mortal remains were kept at Allu Aravind’s residence in Hyderabad, where family members, industry colleagues, and well-wishers gathered to pay their final respects. The last rites were performed later that afternoon in Kokapet, Hyderabad, in a somber ceremony attended by close family and Tollywood luminaries.

Emotional Farewells from Family

The Allu-Konidela family came together in their grief, with superstars Allu Arjun and Ram Charan halting their film shoots to attend their grandmother’s last rites. Allu Arjun, who was in Mumbai shooting for his upcoming film with director Atlee, rushed back to Hyderabad upon hearing the news. A viral video captured the emotional moment when Arjun was seen consoling his son, Ayaan, who was visibly distraught during the funeral. Ram Charan, filming his movie Peddi in Mysore, also canceled his schedule to return to Hyderabad. Both actors, along with Chiranjeevi, Kanakaratnam’s son-in-law and a Tollywood icon, served as pallbearers, carrying her body on a bamboo bed draped in white cloth in a poignant farewell.

Chiranjeevi, married to Kanakaratnam’s daughter Surekha, shared an emotional tribute on X, writing, “Our mother-in-law… The demise of Kanakarathnamma Garu, wife of Sri Allu Ramalingayya Garu, is extremely heartbreaking. The love, courage, and life values she showed to our families will forever be an inspiration to us. I pray to God that her sacred soul attains peace. Om Shanti.” He personally oversaw the funeral arrangements, ensuring a dignified farewell for his mother-in-law.

A Compassionate Final Gesture

In a heartwarming act of compassion, Kanakaratnam’s family honored her wish to donate her eyes, a gesture that reflects her lifelong commitment to giving back. This selfless act has been widely praised, adding to the legacy of kindness she leaves behind. The donation was facilitated through medical channels in Hyderabad, ensuring her contribution continues to impact lives even after her passing.

Condolences from Tollywood and Beyond

The Telugu film industry and its fans were quick to express their sorrow. Actor and Janasena Party General Secretary Naga Babu Konidela, brother of Chiranjeevi, posted on X, “Dear Aravind garu, Vadhina garu, Vasantha garu, and all beloved family members, My heartfelt condolences to you during this time of loss. May you find strength in each other, comfort in cherished memories, and peace in knowing that love never fades.” Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, also Chiranjeevi’s brother, was in Visakhapatnam for a political meeting on August 30 but visited the Allu residence on August 31 to pay his respects. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed his sorrow on X, stating, “The news of the passing of Kanakaratnamma Garu, mother of Allu Aravind and wife of the late Allu Ramalingaiah, is deeply saddening.
