Tragic Fire at Massachusetts Assisted Living Facility Claims 9 Lives, Injures Dozens

July 14, 2025 - A devastating fire at the Gabriel House assisted living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, has left nine people dead and at least 30 injured, marking an "unfathomable tragedy" for the community, according to Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon. The blaze, which erupted around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2025, sent residents screaming for help, some hanging out of windows as heavy smoke and flames engulfed the building.

Chaos and Heroic Response at Gabriel House

Firefighters arrived at the Gabriel House on Oliver Street to a harrowing scene, with intense flames and thick smoke pouring from the main entrance. Approximately 70 residents lived in the facility, which has 100 units and has been operational since 1999, offering independent and assisted living for seniors. First responders, including off-duty firefighters and Fall River police officers, acted swiftly, breaking down doors and carrying non-ambulatory residents to safety. "Their bravery and quick action undoubtedly saved many lives," the Fall River Police Department stated. Despite these efforts, nine residents were declared dead at the scene, and one person remains in critical condition.

Among the survivors, Leo Johnson, 45, of Fall River, recounted his frantic search for his 68-year-old mother, a top-floor resident. “I was kinda freaking out because she wasn’t one of the ones outside,” Johnson told The Boston Globe. He found her safe but shaken, soaked from the facility’s sprinklers.

Investigation Underway, Community in Mourning

The fire, which was extinguished by Monday morning, caused significant smoke damage throughout the facility, though structural damage was confined to one wing. Displaced residents have been relocated to a local shelter, and a family reunification center has been established at the chapel of St. Anne’s Hospital on Middle Street. Families seeking information can contact 508-674-5741 or visit the center via the hospital’s Emergency Room entrance.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police and local authorities. The Gabriel House website highlights its 24-hour staffing, and state regulations mandate sufficient staff to handle emergencies, but the scale of the blaze overwhelmed initial response efforts. Five firefighters sustained minor injuries during the rescue operations.

Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan praised the responders’ “five-star effort” but expressed heartbreak over the loss of life. “We’re here to save lives. Anytime any life is lost, it’s a failure of our job, but we know there are forces beyond our control,” Chief Bacon said, visibly emotional during a press conference.

A Call for Fire Safety Awareness

This tragedy underscores the critical need for robust fire safety measures in assisted living facilities, where elderly residents often face mobility challenges. The Gabriel House fire, described as a five-alarm blaze, has sparked discussions about fire prevention, sprinkler systems, and emergency preparedness in senior care homes.

The Fall River community, located about 20 miles southeast of Providence, Rhode Island, is reeling from the loss. Social media posts on X reflect widespread grief, with users calling it an “unfathomable tragedy” and commending the heroism of first responders.
