Amazon Web Services (AWS) has kicked off Phase 2 construction at its major data center site near Meerkhanpet in South Hyderabad, as part of a massive $7 billion (over ₹63,000 crore) investment to strengthen cloud infrastructure in Telangana.
This development is a key step in AWS’s long-term commitment to expand its Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Region, which will power cloud services, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and digital transformation for businesses and governments across India.
Official Details of the Expansion
The Phase 2 work at Meerkhanpet follows the initial groundwork and is part of a strategic framework agreement signed between AWS and the Telangana government in December 2025. Under this plan, AWS will invest $7 billion over the next 14 years to significantly scale up its data center capacity in the Hyderabad region.
Hyderabad’s AWS region, launched in 2022 as the company’s second data center hub in India after Mumbai, has already seen earlier investments — starting from $2.7 billion in 2020 and later upgraded to $4.4 billion. The latest $7 billion commitment marks a major escalation.
The Telangana government is providing full support, including infrastructure facilities, power, connectivity, and ease-of-doing-business measures to fast-track the project.
Why This Matters for NRIs and the Indian Diaspora
For the large NRI community in the USA, UK, Gulf countries, Canada, Australia, and beyond, this expansion is highly significant:
- Many NRIs work in IT, software, startups, and cloud-related fields. A stronger AWS Hyderabad region means more reliable, high-performance cloud services for global companies with India operations.
- It will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs in engineering, construction, data center operations, and support services — opening opportunities for skilled Indian professionals both in India and abroad.
- Enhanced AI and cloud capabilities will benefit Indian startups, enterprises, and government digital initiatives, indirectly supporting the Indian economy and remittances.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has welcomed the investment, noting the strong global confidence in the state’s vision to become a $3 trillion economy.
Strategic Importance for India’s Digital Growth
The expanded Hyderabad AWS Region is expected to play a central role in:
- Supporting surging demand for cloud computing and AI workloads
- Powering digital services for startups and large enterprises
- Enabling government platforms and India’s overall digital economy growth
This comes at a time when Amazon is making huge global investments in data centers to meet the explosive demand driven by AI and cloud adoption.
Hyderabad continues to establish itself as one of India’s top tech and data center hubs, thanks to its skilled talent pool, improving infrastructure, and investor-friendly policies.
We at NRIGlobe.com will keep tracking this and other major investments shaping India’s tech landscape and their impact on the global Indian diaspora.
