The divorce plea, filed under provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954 (Sections 27(1)(a) and 27(1)(d) related to adultery and cruelty), seeks dissolution of the marriage, the right for Sangeetha to continue residing at their matrimonial home in Neelankarai, and permanent alimony. The court has reportedly accepted the petition, transferred aspects to the Family Welfare Committee, and summoned Vijay to appear on April 20, 2026.

Vijay (51) and Sangeetha (48), a British citizen and daughter of a prominent Tamil industrialist, tied the knot on August 25, 1999, in an interfaith Hindu ceremony in Chennai. Their marriage blended Hindu and Christian rituals, reflecting Sangeetha's background—she was once a devoted fan who later became his wife and a low-profile supporter during his film career. The couple has two children: son Jason Sanjay and daughter Divya Saasha.

In recent years, Sangeetha has maintained a notably private life, staying away from Vijay's political rallies and public appearances since the launch of TVK.
