In a stunning development that has sent shockwaves through Tamil cinema and political circles, Sangeetha Sornalingam, wife of actor-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Thalapathy Vijay, has filed a petition for divorce after over 27 years of marriage. The petition, submitted to the Family Court in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, accuses Vijay of infidelity, specifically claiming an extramarital relationship with a female actress.
According to multiple reports citing the court filing, Sangeetha alleges that she discovered in April 2021 that Vijay was involved in an “adulterous relationship with an actress.” The petition states that despite her objections and Vijay’s initial assurances to end the affair, the relationship continued, causing her “deep emotional pain and mental suffering, amounting to betrayal and violation of marital trust.” It further claims that Vijay maintained an “open association” with the actress, including traveling abroad together and attending public events, while the actress reportedly posted photos on social media that Vijay neither denied nor objected to, tacitly endorsing them.
The divorce plea, filed under provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954 (Sections 27(1)(a) and 27(1)(d) related to adultery and cruelty), seeks dissolution of the marriage, the right for Sangeetha to continue residing at their matrimonial home in Neelankarai, and permanent alimony. The court has reportedly accepted the petition, transferred aspects to the Family Welfare Committee, and summoned Vijay to appear on April 20, 2026.
Vijay (51) and Sangeetha (48), a British citizen and daughter of a prominent Tamil industrialist, tied the knot on August 25, 1999, in an interfaith Hindu ceremony in Chennai. Their marriage blended Hindu and Christian rituals, reflecting Sangeetha’s background—she was once a devoted fan who later became his wife and a low-profile supporter during his film career. The couple has two children: son Jason Sanjay and daughter Divya Saasha.
In recent years, Sangeetha has maintained a notably private life, staying away from Vijay’s political rallies and public appearances since the launch of TVK. Reports indicate the couple has been living separately for the past two years, fueling earlier speculation, though neither addressed it publicly until now.
This personal crisis comes at a critical juncture for Vijay, who transitioned from a blockbuster Tamil film career to full-time politics with the formation of TVK. As Tamil Nadu gears up for upcoming assembly elections, the timing has intensified scrutiny from fans, media, and political observers. No official response has been issued yet from Vijay, his family, or TVK representatives.
The allegations remain unverified in court and are based on Sangeetha’s petition. The matter is now sub judice, and further developments are awaited as legal proceedings unfold.
